How to COVID: Styling Face Masks

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past six months, you’re probably familiar with the concept of wearing a face mask while in public; and by all means, hopefully, you are also FOLLOWING this rule. The CDC highly “advises Americans to wear face coverings when leaving your home” and to keep wearing them while in public, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. While it has become an everyday task for us to wear our face masks while in public, it can be repetitive and tiresome after a while. Here are some great ways you can spice up your mask attire and incorporate your own personal, fashionable, and universally stylish twist to wearing a mask.

Black is a universally chic, cool, and stylish color, and having one, or even a few, black masks will make matching your face masks to your outfit a million times easier. On the other hand, I would highly advise against contrary colors. Wearing a white mask may look super clean and sharp, but if you wear makeup you most likely have dealt with your makeup smudging on the inside of your mask. Regardless if you wear makeup or not, it gets hot under that mask and sweat stains are not a cute look (even if you’re the only one that’ll see them under there).

Another tip for makeup wearers is to purchase a mask in a nude tone similar to your skin color. Then, when your makeup does rub off, it’ll be less noticeable inside the mask and saves you that awkward moment when you realize your face has been imprinted on the inside of your mask. Owning face masks in neutral colors, such as black, beige, brown, and gray, allows for easy matching and coordinating with your outfits.

On the contrary, if you feel like your face masks are too plain or look boring, I recommend face masks with mouths printed on them. I recently purchased a couple of face masks that have teeth on them. Two of them are a straight row of teeth, that make me look like I'm smiling (but with a tooth missing), and another is a smile with some blush marks. It may seem childish at first, but if you style them properly to match your presence and confidence, you’ll catch everyone’s attention with your new toothy grin.
